Become a Volunteer


This is a list of ongoing volunteer openings at Welcome Inn and New Horizons Thrift Store.  For current openings, to apply, and/or to discuss an idea you have to volunteer your time, please call and ask for the volunteer coordinator or submit the electronic form at the bottom of this page.

Responsibilities: Welcome visitors, answer phones, take messages, small office tasks, create a welcoming environment for friends.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week (morning or afternoon).

Qualifications: Previous experience in an office environment is an asset. Ability to read and write is required.

Learning and Fun (LAF) After School Mentor
Responsibilities: Work one-on-one with a student on homework, math, and reading, build a friendship with a child, assist with leading group activities as desired, prepare snacks, set-up and clean-up as required.

Time Commitment: One day per week, 3-5pm.

Qualifications: Love of children and ability to read and write.

Summer Day Camp Counsellor
Responsibilities: Supervise and engage with children aged 5-11, play games, lead music, swim, participate in outings and ensure safety at all times.

Time Commitment: Minimum of one week in July or the first week of August and a maximum of 5, Monday to Friday 8:30 – 4:30.

Qualifications: Love of kids, patience, enthusiasm, and ability to participate in camp activities.

Food Bank Worker
Responsibilities: Serve people accessing the food pantry; sort, shelve, and pack food; create a friendly, safe and welcoming environment.

Time Commitment: Monday, Wednesday, and/or Friday from 11:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Qualifications: Care for people, ability to work well with others, ability to read and write is an asset.

Food Sorter
Responsibilities: Unload the food truck, sort, organize and put away large quantities of food for the food pantry.

Time Commitment: Mondays from 9:30 -11:30 am.

Qualifications: Ability to lift and carry heavy boxes.

Seniors Program Volunteer
Responsibilities: Assist with meal preparation, serving and/or clean up, create a friendly environment for seniors, assist with activities as needed, drive seniors for occasional outings.

Time Commitment: Tuesdays 9 am – 1 pm

Qualifications: Previous experience with food handling and seniors is an asset.

Seniors Visitor
Responsibilities: To provide friendship through visiting a senior in their home or in the community.

Time Commitment: 1 hour per week or 1 hour every other week depending on the senior.

Qualifications: Warm, friendly, and people-oriented.  Enjoys being with seniors.

Seniors Phone Visitor
Responsibilities: To regularly check in with an isolated senior by phone.

Time Commitment: 1-2 phone calls per week or ½ – 1 hour.

Qualifications: Good listening skills, compassion, and clear communication skills.

Receiver – New Horizons
Responsibilities: Receiving all donations received at the store.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week.

Qualifications: Ability to lift heavy boxes and furniture. Must be able to take initiative as well as direction.

Sorter – New Horizons
Responsibilities: Sort and price all donations which will be sold in the store according to pricing guidelines.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week.

Qualifications: Ability to work well within a system. Good interpersonal skills.

Clerk – New Horizons
Responsibilities: Ensure the store stock is neat and orderly at all times. Be available to assist customers in a warm and friendly manner.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week.

Qualifications: Good interpersonal and organizational skills.

Cashier/Assistant Manager – New Horizons
Responsibilities: Manage the cash register and cash area at all times. Ensure all transactions are done in a warm and friendly manner.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week.

Qualifications: Experience in retail is beneficial but not necessary. Able to handle cash transactions accurately. Ability to problem solve and good interpersonal skills.

Manager – New Horizons
Responsibilities: Supervise and support all volunteers on duty. Assist individuals with solving conflicts as they arise. Back-up to cashier when required.

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week.

Qualifications: Proven team leadership and interpersonal skills. Ability to problem solve and take initiative as necessary.

Board of Directors Member
Responsibilities: Strategic Direction of Welcome Inn Community Centre, participate in monthly meetings of the whole board as well as serving on a committee (Personnel, Finance, Strategic Planning or Fundraising), participate in strategic planning, fundraising, and more!

Time Commitment: 4-8 hours per month (except July and August).

Qualifications: Previous board experience is helpful. Expertise in the areas of long-range planning, finance, fundraising and/or human resources.  Commitment to the vision, mission, and values of Welcome Inn.
