Volunteers are the life blood of the Welcome Inn Community. Every year over 400 people give of themselves and their time as a volunteer in our programs. Volunteering is a way to give back but it also changes lives as people build friendships, learn new skills and understand they are valued. We are so appreciative of all our volunteers, not just for what they do but also for what they mean to our community.
Volunteering at Welcome Inn changed Melissa’s life – here she tells us how:
In January 2014, I decided to make a change in my life. I was ready. I sought out some place to help me plant the seed that needed to be planted for me to grow again. I applied for a Volunteer Job at the Welcome Inn and was welcomed as part of your community.
That is when my journey began, I started out only a day a week, then two, then four. I fell in love with everything the Welcome Inn and its Community stands for. As my confidence grew, I took on more responsibilities, helping you, help me.
In 2016 my grandmother was diagnosed with dementia followed by breast cancer. I began to take care of her as well as volunteer at Welcome Inn. As time continued to go on, I decided I was ready for the next step and I went to school to become a Personal Support Worker and help care for people like my grandmother. I realized by helping her and helping the Welcome Inn Community that I feel stronger when I am helping others.
I graduated school end of June, and today I was hired as a Personal Support Worker. My future now lays ahead, a road for me to follow, and this could not have happened without all the support from many of the staff and community at the Welcome Inn.
I just want to give a heartfelt thank you for never letting me doubt I could do this and for allowing me the chance to find my place again. You all changed me and allowed me to get this far. The Welcome Inn Community Centre is a special place and I thank each and every one of you for being apart of my life!
We always have room for more volunteers – check out the opportunities!
